Living lyrics expressing gypsy pride in the most sublime and synesthetic visual expression, from the superb evocation of the Croatian musical ensemble Cinkuši, which has revitalised Croatia’s indigenous heritage, to the aesthetic allegory – somewhat surreal – of the animation proposed by Meštrović …..

…to convey the atmosphere, sensations and sociological imagery of a “tribe” or group that is commonly excluded and, above all, marginalised from Slavic society.

The short film is wonderful, even though it looks like a music video, because it incorporates Cinkuši’s style, which fuses elements of Balkan folk with modern influences, while also exploring the delicate issue of discrimination. Note the references to the “gypsy party”, “gypsy music” and expressions such as “stinking gypsies” are part of the poetic and musical representation of gypsy life, which is the central theme, but it also includes elements of everyday life: images and expressions that evoke everyday life, such as food (“river sausages”, “vegetable soup”), objects (“tambourine”, ‘stained sweets’, “pacifier”), and family scenes (‘sewing for the bride’) and gives him time to approach what I would call rituality and desire: phrases such as ‘May God grant it’ and ‘God bless you’ reinforce the ritual dimension and desire for well-being, typical of celebrations and community gatherings.
